General Summary:

The Process Support Scientist will act as a technical resource across multiple facets of the company including, but not limited to, Operations, Research, Development, Quality and Sales support. Candidates should have industry experience and a strong background in polymer processing (preferably extrusion) and characterization techniques. The ideal candidate will primarily be responsible for guiding internal teams towards new product development by exhibiting organization, data analysis, problem solving, and material science skills. Secondary responsibility will be to assist Operations in Continuous Improvement and Quality Improvement activities where material science can be used as part of a problem resolution.  Candidate must have ability to effectively communicate with employees from all disciplines including manufacturing, engineering, skill trades, and executive management. 


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Define resin and additive requirements for product development
  • Development of new and improvement of existing applications
  • Define reaction chemistries, product properties and process operation parameters
  • Provide technical application as well as material selection assistance for different applications
  • Conduct statistical analysis of processes, reactions and properties
  • Involvement in product developments and continuous improvements at manufacturing facilities
  • Evaluation and characterization of polymers during both product development and quality problem resolution processes
  • Numerically formulate design requirements


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • PhD Polymer Science, preferred
  • 5  years minimum polymer industry experience as a Polymer Chemist/ Scientist
  • Hands on experience with analytical instruments including, but not limited to,  DSC, TGA, FT-IR, MFR, Tensile tester, SEM, TGA/MS,GPC and UV/Vis
  • Material characterization by mechanical and chemical properties
  • Statistical Design and analysis of experiments implementation
  • Statistical data analysis and failure mode effects analysis
  • In-depth background in process and product development
  • Strong trouble shooting skills
  • Polymer blends and compounding
  • Polymer rheology
  • Polymer structure and property relationships
  • Polymer failure analysis
  • Background in process and product development
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral
  • Strong computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, data collection and analysis, use and development of database
  • Must function well within a team oriented organizational environment
  • Detail and results oriented
  • Ability to carry out duties and responsibilities with limited supervision
  • Ability to maintain flexibility for changing priorities
  • Occasional travel may be required.
